MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Michael Gerrity scored 14 points and Chase Griffin had 12 as Pepperdine held on to beat San Diego 55-54 Monday night despite going scoreless for nearly three minutes to close the game.
Ross DeRogatis missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have won it for San Diego.
Gerrity's two free throws with 2:48 left gave the Waves (5-9, 1-1 West Coast Conference) their final points and their biggest lead, 55-49.
San Diego's Corey Belser answered with a pair of free throws at the other end, and the Toreros (10-5, 0-2) closed to 55-54 on DeRogatis' 3-pointer with 1:25 left.
Pepperdine's Cody Horning missed the front end of a one-and-one, but San Diego's Gyno Pomare missed both of his free-throw attempts at the other end with 9.2 seconds left.
Pepperdine knocked the rebound out of bounds, though, giving San Diego a final inbounds opportunity with 2.1 seconds left.
From the baseline, Brandon Johnson found DeRogatis on the perimeter, but the shot rimmed out.
Pomare and Nick Lewis each scored 11 points for San Diego.
The Toreros' 54 points were a season-low and also the fewest allowed by Pepperdine this year.
