(San Diego, CA) - The USD Toreros evened their record at 1-1 with tonight's 74-69 home victory over the visiting UC San Diego Tritons. Senior guard Ross DeRogatis scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the 2nd half as the Toreros overcame a 34-33 halftime deficit. For the second straight game USD received double digit scoring from DeRogatis, Gyno Pomare (15 points), Nir Cohen (14 points) and Brandon Johnson (13 points). The Toreros will gun for their second straight victory this Thursday when they host the Point Loma Crusaders at 7 pm.
The scrappy Tritons jumped out to a 7 point lead five minutes into the 2nd half, taking a 45-38 lead on two free throws by Shane Poppen. Two straight Theo White buckets got USD right back into the mix, and the game stayed close the rest of the way. USD took its first lead of the 2nd half at 57-56 from two free throws by Kyle Price. USD would lead the rest of the way, going up by as many as 7 points at 68-61 on a three-pointer from DeRogatis. UCSD closed to within 72-69 with 15 seconds left, but Brandon Johnson iced the game with two free throws with 10 seconds to go.
For the game USD shot 53.5% from the field (23-43), but were outrebounded 26-24. UCSD was led by Robby Peters with 17 points as he canned 5-of-7 three-pointers. The Tritons made 9-of-15 treys for the game.
