Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman left-hander Brian Matusz throws five solid innings guiding the 13th-ranked University of San Diego Baseball team to an 11-4 non-conference victory against UC Davis Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

With the win the Toreros remain unblemished on the season improving to 5-0 and claim the three-game series with the Aggies, who pull even at 2-2 (.500) with the loss.

Matusz (1-0), a native of Cave Creek, Ariz, allowed one run on five hits while striking out six in five compete innings of work in picking up his first collegiate win.

USD jumped out to an 11-0 lead through the first five innings, with the big lift coming in the second inning when USD put up four runs. Shane Buschini got things rolling with his single to lead off the inning. He was moved to second on Steve Singleton's single through the left side and USD loaded the bases with a Logan Gelbrich single down the right field line. Freshman Josh Romanski then hit a two-run single to center field, and USD capped the scoring on a Keoni Ruth sacrifice fly to right field and a Daniel Magness single to left field.

USD kept the momentum going in the third inning as they put up three more runs on a Singleton run scoring double down the right field line, a Ruth bases loaded walk and a Justin Snyder single to center field.

After the Toreros put up three more runs in the fifth inning, virtually putting the game out of reach, the Aggies were able to get on the boards scoring one run on a David Huffman sacrifice bunt. UC Davis would then score three runs in the sixth, but come no closer to the Toreros leaving the game at its final of 11-4.

The Toreros had five batters record muti-hit days with Snyder going 3-for-4 with two RBI and Singleton going 3-for-5 with one RBI.

UCD's starter Vince DeCoito (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Aggies allowing seven runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work.

USD will look to run their win streak to six on Sunday afternoon as they conclude the three-game series with UC Davis in a 1 p.m. game.
