ATHENS, Ga. - A late rally by the University of Georgia led to a 9-8 defeat of the eighth-ranked University of San Diego baseball team in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Foley Field.
With the loss the Toreros fall to 7-6 on the season and run their losing streak to five games. With the win Georgia remains undefeated moving to 6-0 and complete a three-game sweep of the Toreros.
USD wasted no time in scoring as they put up four runs in the first inning. Steve Singleton led off the inning with a single to right field and moved to second on a Keoni Ruth bunt. Justin Snyder then laid a bunt down the third base line, and Georgia's starting pitcher Nathan Moreau misplayed the ball and committed an error which allowed Singleton to score the first run of the day and moved Ruth to second base. Jordan Abruzzo then doubled down the left field line scoring Ruth from second and advancing Snyder to third. USD's final two runs came on a Ryan Lilly sacrifice fly and a Kevin Hansen bunt giving USD a 4-0 lead.
After the Bulldogs took back two runs in the bottom of the first, USD would respond in the fifth inning when Daniel Magness hit a solo home run over the right field fence to push the lead to three. USD's final runs came in the sixth inning on a Ruth RBI single and an Abruzzo run-scoring double giving USD a commanding 7-2 lead.
Georgia then scored seven runs over the next two innings to take a two-run lead into the ninth, where USD took back one run on a Hansen ground out to first base, scoring Lilly who had walked. But USD could come no closer leaving the game at its final of 9-8.
Offensively for the Toreros, five batters recorded two hits on the day with Abruzzo going 2-for-5 with two RBI and two doubles, Ruth going 2-for-4 with one RBI, Magness going 2-for-5 with two RBI and one home run, Hansen going 2-for-4 with two RBI and Logan Gelbrich went 2-for-3.
