May 18, 2006

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of San Diego men's golf team completed its first round of its inaugural appearance in the NCAA tournament at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club by posting a team score of 299, 11 shots over Par and currently sit in 26th place.

Fresno State University is the clubhouse leader at 8-under and the University of Nevada shot 6-under.

USD's senior Luke Antonelli had the best outing for the Toreros as he shot an even Par for the first round. Freshman Jake Yount also had a solid day for the Toreros as he shot a 73 in the first round.

"I got off to a good start but had a rough time on the back nine," said Antonelli. "The conditions are perfect so there is no excuse not to play well."

"We didn't play how we wanted to but everybody fought hard," said head coach Tim Mickelson. "We have five solid players and two played well today."

Jimmy Harris shot a 74 in the first round, Bucky Coe shot an 81 and Mike Berry shot an 80 to round out the scoring for USD.

The top 10 teams following Saturday's final round will advance to the NCAA Championship at Sunriver, Ore
