San Diego Pulls Away From UC Riverside, 78-62

Gyno Pomare scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead USD to a 78-62 home win over the UC Riverside Highlanders. The win improved USD's season mark to 10-6 and marked the second straight season USD collected 10 nonconference wins. It also improves USD's home record to a perfect 7-0. Nir Cohen came off the bench to add 13 points and Brandon Johnson chipped in with 10. UCR's Chris Johnson totaled a game-high 25 points. USD continues WCC play this Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. game at Pepperdine.

In the first half the Toreros found themselves down by as many as 7 points, and six with just over 3 minutes to go. From there USD battled back as Gyno Pomare nailed a jumper, Ross DeRogatis connected on a three and Brandon Johnson hit a free throw and basket to give USD a 32-30 halftime advantage.

USD increased its lead to 42-34 in the first five minutes of the 2nd half, and then eventually pulled away from UC Riverside (3-14). Nir Cohen scored 11 of his 13 points in the 2nd half to give the team a boost, and Pomare scored 14 of his 22 in the final 20 minutes. The 22 point total for Pomare is a personal-best.

USD head coach Brad Holland missed the game to tend to a family matter. The Toreros will look to get their WCC record back to .500 when they visit the Waves on Saturday.
