DAYTON, Ohio - The University of San Diego football team suffered its first regular season PFL loss to the Dayton Flyers Saturday afternoon as the Toreros fell 35-16. USD Quarterback Josh Johnson did record his 100th touchdown pass of his career, however was unable to find a rhythm against the Flyers.
Dayton scored quickly in the first two minutes of the game on a 14 yard pass to Matt Champa taking a 7-0 lead. USD marched 68 yards down the field five minutes later to tie the game as Josh Johnson hooked up with Godfrey Smith. The Dayton Flyers would score two more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 21-7 lead at the break.
Ten minutes into the third quarter, the Flyers found the endzone again as Ben Shappie finished off a 13-play 60-yard drive with a two yard rush to extend Dayton's lead 28-7.
With one minute left in the third quarter, USD's Hutch Parker posted a 43-yard field goal cutting Dayton's lead 28-10. In the fourth quarter, Johnson found Mitch Ryan in the endzone for a 14-yard touchdown pass as the Toreros fought to comeback. The decision to go for two on a Josh Johnson pass attempt failed leaving the Toreros stuck at 16-28.
The Flyers would burn out the remainder of the fourth quarter on a drive that led to their fifth touchdown of the afternoon for the final score of 35-16.
The loss is USD's first regular season PFL defeat since 2004 snapping an 18 game regular season winning streak.
Johnson threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns, and was 18-41 on passing attempts. Receiver Wes Doyle had eight receptions for 63 yards on the day. Runningback JT Rogan had 13 carries for 43 yards. Eric Bakhtiari totaled two pass sacks (-17 yards), and blocked two field goal attempts, to go with 9 tackes. Tyler Evans (13 tackles) and Gabe Derricks (10 stops) also turned in solid outings as the Torero defense was busy all afternoon.
Dayton quarterback Kevin Hoyng rushed for 127 yards rushing with two touchdowns. Passed for 252 yards with two touchdowns and finished 23-29 on the day.
The football team returns home to take on the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday, November 3rd at 2:00 p.m. from Torero Stadium.
