Final Stats
MOREHEAD, Ky. - The USD Toreros (9-1; 6-1 PFL) downed Morehead State (7-3; 5-2 PFL) by the score of 27-14 to finish their PFL slate with a 6-1 mark. With the win, coupled with Dayton's 34-27 victory over Drake, the Toreros finish as co-PFL Champions. It marks the third straight year USD has won or shared the title. Due to their win over USD earlier this season, the Dayton Flyers (10-1; 6-1 PFL) will represent the PFL in the Gridiron Classic on December 1st. Torero junior running back JT Rogan had a big day with 154 yards rushing and 1 TD, and 3 receptions for 50 yards and a score. USD will close out its season next Saturday at UC Davis.
Senior QB Josh Johnson also had another solid outing finishing 14-for-27 for 211 yards and 2 scores. He broke his own single season mark of 36 TD passes, and now has 38 on the year. Senior kicker Hutch Parker opened the game with a 35-yard field goal 4 minutes into the game, and also put USD's final stamp on the victory with a 43-yard field goal with 9:32 to go in the game. JT Rogan's 1-yard TD run with 4:35 left in the first gave USD a 10-0 lead.
In the second quarter Johnson hit WR John Matthews for a 16-yard TD with 9:30 left to increase USD's lead to 17-0. It was Matthews' 14th touchdown reception this season, a new USD single season record. Morehead State QB Brian Yost hit Eric Fitzpatrick for a 31-yard TD with 6:10 left in the 1st half to pull the Eagles to within 17-7. USD answered right back with Rogan and Johnson getting together for a 51-yard TD pass play. USD went into the locker room at halftime leading 24-7.
The lone score of the 3rd period came from the host Eagles with Yost and Fitzpatrick connecting for a 15-yard TD play. For the game USD WR Wes Doyle hauled in 4 passes for 62 yards before leaving the game with a foot injury. He now has 71 receptions on the season and needs just three catches against UC Davis for a new school mark. Defensively the Toreros were paced by DB Gabe Derricks (10 tackles, 9 solo), DE Eric Bakhtiari (6 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 tackles for loss), Alex Rice (6 tackles) and Ronnie Pentz (5 solo stops). USD tallied three interceptions - Ben Hannula, Ryan Echer and Taber LeMarr.
