(Anaheim, CA) - The USD Toreros dropped their 4th straight contest in a span of seven days with today's 77-55 loss to South Alabama. USD, coming off a string of hardfought losses to UNLV, SDSU, and USC, did not produce the same intensity or approach in falling to 2-6 on the season. The Toreros will try to regroup tomorrow before returning Sunday to face UC Irvine in a 12:30 p.m. matchup that will air on ESPNU. Brandon Johnson led USD with 17 points while Gyno Pomare chipped in with 11. South Alabama, which shot 50% for the game, and outrebounded USD 38-21, was paced by guard Demetric Bennett with 28 points.
"I've been talking to the team about lessons learned and I thought they learned the biggest lesson today on how to come out with an approach," said coach Bill Grier. "Our approach wasn't good. We got throttled on the glass and were disjointed on offense. They executed themselves well and we fouled way too much."
The Toreros dug themselves a big hole in the first half by falling behind 36-20 at intermission. The Toreros shot just 21.7% in the first half on 5-of-23 shooting. In the second half, down by as many as 21 points early, fought back to withing 10 points on three occasions, the last at 55-45 with 8:18 to go. That would be as close as USD would get.
