SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior's strikers Jen Mello and Amy Epsten each scored a goal to lift the 15th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team to a 2-0 West Coast Conference win over Saint Mary's College Sunday afternoon at USD's Torero Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 11-3-2 overall, move to 3-0-0 in the WCC and have now won four consecutive matches. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 8-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the WCC.
Mello scored the game-winner at the 76:49 mark, as sophomore midfielder Jackie Zinke sent a cross to the far side, where Mello hit a one-timer into the upper far side of the goal to tally her team-leading ninth goal of the season and give USD the only goal they would need.
Just under two minutes later at the 78:05 mark, Mello was in the giving mood, as she sent a cross to Epsten, who corralled the pass, turned and first off a laser strike into the upper right side of the goal to put the match at its final of 2-0.
The Toreros outshot the Gaels 26-5 and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron picked up her second consecutive shutout in goal as she allowed no goals and recorded no saves. Tara Larson was saddled with the loss in goal for the Gaels as she allowed two goals and recorded nine saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they head to Malibu to take on Pepperdine University in a 3 p.m. WCC match.
