SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team suffered their first WCC loss of the season to the Santa Clara Broncos Sunday afternoon. The Toreros fall to 4-6-3 overall and 4-1-0 in the WCC while the Broncos improve to 3-6-4 and 4-1-0 in the WCC.
San Diego had numerous strong shot attempts in the match. Defender Corey Norris had a crossing pass to teammate Trevor May who headed the ball which beat Santa Clara goalkeeper Kevin Klasila. However the ball hit the near post and popped out. The Toreros also had an opportunity on a questionable foul in the second half. The USD bench thought the foul occurred in the box, but the official laid the ball down just outside the penalty box and the Torero's shot sailed high.
In the 25th minute Santa Clara's Brian Martin received the ball about 16 yards out and took his shot directly at USD's keeper Kelin Briones, who made the save. However, Briones lost possession of the ball and Santa Clara junior Jeff Cosgriff gained control. He took the shot in the upper corner of the far post lifting the Broncos 1-0.
During the second half, San Diego took control with seven shot attempts trying to score the equalizer but was unable to net a goal.
San Diego returns home for practice this week before splitting a home and away match against Loyola Marymount. The Toreros travel to Los Angeles on Thursday, October 23 to play the Lions at 2:00 p.m., and then return home on Sunday October 26 for a 2:00 p.m. match at Torero Stadium.
