San Diego, CA - The visiting Dayton Flyers (8-1; 5-0 PFL) overcame a 22-6 second quarter deficit and scored 24 unanswered points in dealing the San Diego Toreros (6-2; 4-2 PFL) a 30-22 defeat. The loss snapped USD's 28-game home winning streak which started back in October of 2004. In a hard-fought battle the entire evening before 4,478 fans at Torero Stadium, it was the Flyers that scored 17 second half points in netting the victory.
"It's frustrating because I know we are capable of playing better," said head coach Ron Caragher. "We expect more. We demand more. We demand more from our kids and we didn't get it and that's frustrating. In the first half we did a lot of good things, but in the second half we just didn't make the plays, and that was the difference."
Dayton got on the scoreboard first with a Nick Glavin 30-yard field goal with 7:25 left in the 1st quarter. Torero QB Sebastian Trujillo connected with WR John Matthews for the 15th time this season with 2:41 left in the quarter, but USD's point-after touchdown kick was blocked. Glavin's 42-yard field goal at the 14:15 mark of the 2nd quarter knotted the score at 6-all. From there USD jumped out to a 22-6 lead as John McGough hauled in a 21-yard pass from Trujillo and freshman CB Al-Rilwan Adeyemi returned an interception 57 yards with 2:11 left in the half. San Diego converted on back-to-back two-point conversions. Dayton went 8 plays and 75 yards in just 1:12 to score just before halftime as Bart Bergeld hauled in a 16-yard pass from QB Rob Florian.
In the second half Dayton put the clamps on the Torero offense, and would tally their 17 points on Glavin's third field goal of the game, this time from 22 yards out in the 3rd period; Bergfeld caught his second 16-yarder with 4:04 to go in the 3rd; and Ben Shappie scored from 3-yards out with 14:19 left in the game. From there USD would get three more cracks with drive opportunities, but were unable to cash in.
For the game Trujillo completed 27-of-44 for 216 yards and 2 TDs; wide receiver John Matthews tied his own school mark with 11 receptions for 104 yards and his 15th TD reception; Ben Hannula caught 7 balls for 48 yards; Kyle Negrete averaged 47.5 yards on 4 punts with a long of 62 and two going out inside Dayton's 10-yard line; Derek Marten totaled 10 tackles; and CB Al-Rilwan Adeyemi added 5 stops and 2 interceptions.
Dayton's Rob Florian completed 34-of-43 passes for 353 yards and 2 scores; WR Justin Millio caught 12 balls for 101 yards; and LB Steve McDonald totaled 9 stops and 3 tackles-for-loss.
USD continues PFL play next Saturday, Nov. 8th, with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Davidson College.
