SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team made an outstanding comeback against the first-place University of San Francisco Don's as they tied up their Friday night match 1-1 on a penalty kick, until the Don's punched a last minute goal with three minutes to go to win 2-1 over the Toreros.
San Francisco scored early on a header by defender Jeff Russell. Leon Williams send a ball from just outside the penalty box to Russell who sent a header over the head of diving goalkeeper Kelin Briones and into the net for the 1-0 lead in the 9th minute.
Both teams battled for control of the match, however San Francisco dominated as apparent by the 12-4 shot margin in favor of the Don's. USF also recorded seven corner kicks to San Diego's two.
With 83 minutes, San Diego managed to tie up the match on a penalty kick. Forward Andrew Feld was on the attack in the USF penalty box when he was fouled hard. Senior midfielder Eddie Ahman lined up the penalty kick and put it past San Francisco goalkeeper Jeremy Coupe for the equalizer.
It was in the 87th minute that San Francisco put the game-winner in the net. Leon Williams again tallied the assist when he connected with forward Conor Chinn on a centering pass which was again headed into the net past Briones.
The Toreros remain in the hunt for a playoff spot for post season play with a 6-10-3 overall record and a 6-5-0 WCC mark while USF improves to 9-8-2 and 7-3-1 overall.
San Diego returns to Torero Stadium on Sunday afternoon against Santa Clara where they will recognize the seniors prior to kickoff in the final match of their campaign. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
