LOS ANGELES, Calif. - A deflection goal ended the season for the 16th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team as second-seeded UCLA claimed a 1-0 win over the Toreros Monday evening in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at UCLA's Drake Stadium.
The Toreros end their season with a 15-5-2 overall record. UCLA improves to 20-0-2 overall and will advance on to meet USC in the Sweet-16 of the NCAA Tournament.
The game-winning goal came at the 77:08 minute mark, as a flurry of UCLA offensive activity happened in front of the Torero goal. Then UCLA's Kara Lang shot the ball and it was blocked by the USD defense and a USD defender then touched the ball and it flew just two inches over Brittany Cameron's reach, and hit the cross bar, then the post, and into the goal to give the Bruins a 1-0 win.
San Diego had a golden scoring opportunity come in the 23rd minute of action. Jackie Zinke was crossing in front of the net and fired off a shot that hit the cross bar and caused the UCLA goalkeeper to be out of position. Amy Epsten then had a chance for a rebounded shot and headed the ball over the cross bar ending the scoring threat.
In the final three minutes of action, USD had a great chance to tie things up, as Zinke was at the top right of the goal box and rocketed off a shot that flew just four inches over the cross bar, ending the USD scoring threat once again.
