Toreros Push UTEP to the Final Whistle in 1-0 Road Loss

San Diego outshot the Miners 9-4 and did not allow a goal over the final 79 minutes at University Field

EL PASO, Texas — Las Toreras carried the run of play for most of Thursday night at University Field, but an 11th-minute goal gave UTEP the 1-0 decision.

San Diego, however, finished with the advantage in almost every attacking category. The Toreros put up nine shots to UTEP's four, held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal, won the corner kick battle 4-3 and closed with 51% of the possession against a team that came into the night unbeaten.

Tamia Graham and Marissa Morales carried the Torero attack in the opening half. Graham tested the UTEP keeper in the 27th minute and Morales put another shot on frame in the 31st. A Mia Teran attempt was blocked in between, giving San Diego three looks inside of four minutes.

Though the Miners struck first, the Toreros did not permit UTEP to expand its early lead. San Diego allowed just two shots the rest of the way, only one of which reached the frame. Chloe Walls went the full 90 minutes in goal and finished with two saves.

The Toreros turned up the pressure early in the second half. Hailey Vermilyea forced a save in the 53rd minute and Veronica Osejo forced another in the 56th, with San Diego winning a corner kick off each sequence. Both players made an impact coming off the bench.

That was the story of the night for a San Diego attack that got contributions from all over the roster. All nine Toreros shots came from nine different players, and four of them came from substitutes, including two of the four attempts that were on target. Ten players entered off the bench and 21 saw the field in all.

San Diego kept coming until the whistle. Kate Sealy got off a shot in the 76th minute, Lily Johnson had a look at goal in the 83rd and Elise Miller got an attempt away in the 87th.

"Tonight was frustrating because we defended well enough to get a result, but one moment on a set piece decided the game," head coach Greg LaPorte said. "We'll own it, learn from it and move forward. I was proud of the way the group kept competing and pushing for an equalizer."
