SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer program suffered it's second conference loss of the season Sunday afternoon to Saint Mary's College at Torero Stadium.
The loss drops the Toreros to 6-7-3 overall and 6-2-0 in West Coast Conference play while the Gaels improve to 4-8-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the conference.
Midfielder Erik Rivas scored first for Saint Mary's in the 36th minute of the match. The Gaels were attacking from inside the Torero penalty box. Surrounded by Torero defense, a pass was deflected back at Rivas standing 11 yards out in front of the net. The shot went past a diving Kelin Briones who attempted to block but ended up in the net for the 1-0 lead.
San Diego outshot the Gaels by a margin of 5-3 in the first half and recorded three corner kicks despite not being able to put a goal in the net.
In the 66th minute, Yousef Samy put away the insurance goal for the Gaels. Midfielder Bryan Vandoornick brought the ball up the nearside into USD territory. He sent a pass to the top of the penalty box where Samy was waiting. Samy one-touched to settle the ball and fired off a low shot to the left past Briones sealing the 2-0 victory for the Gaels.
San Diego remained the shot leader in the match over the Gaels 11-9 and posted five corner kicks to Saint Mary's 1. Goalkeeper Jason Badger recorded four saves in the match, while Briones had two.
San Diego prepares to travel to the Northwest to take on the Portland Pilots and the Gonzaga Bulldogs. They face the Bulldogs on Friday, November 7 at 1:00 p.m. and then meet up with the Pilots on Sunday, November 9 at 2:00 p.m.
