SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three University of San Diego women's basketball players recorded double-digit afternoons, but it wasn't enough as the Toreros (2-2) were dealt a 70-64 loss to Cal Poly (2-1) Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Senior center Amber Sprague led all players with her 19 points on 8-for-18 shooting, while pulling down a game-high nine rebounds and had a season-high five blocks. Kiva Herman was the second USD player in double figures as she had 16 points on 7-for-16 shooting from the field and Sam Child was the final Torero in double figures as she had 11 on 5-for-15 shooting. As a team, USD shot 38 percent from the floor and out rebounded the Mustangs 46-36.
In the first half, the Toreros jumped out to 8-3 lead as a Sprague jumper sparked the run and another Sprague jumped book ended the early run. After a Cal Poly bucket, Sprague sparked a 7-4 run that was capped on a Herman jumper to give USD a 15-7 advantage with 14:01 to go in the first half.
The Mustangs then began to chip away at the Torero lead and tied things up at 16-16 on a Kristina Santiago jumper with 5:29 remaining. The two teams then sea sawed back and forth for the remainder of the half with the Toreros taking a three-point lead going into the break at 34-31.
In the second half, the two teams were sea sawing back and forth right from the get-go. The Mustangs would tie things up at 44-44 with 14:39 to go, and the two teams would then trade basket for basket over the next five minutes. Then with USD leading 53-52, a Tamara Wells jumper would give the Mustangs a one point lead with 9:28 to go. Cal Poly never surrendered the lead as they went on to claim a 70-64 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday as they host cross-town rival San Diego State University in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
