SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Four second half goals lifted the second-ranked University of Portland Pilots to a 4-1 win over No. 11 University of San Diego Saturday evening in the regular-season finale at Torero Stadium.
With he loss, the Toreros conclude the regular-season with a 14-4-2 overall record and finish second in the WCC with a 6-1-0 record. With the win, the Pilots improve to 17-1-0 overall, move to 7-0-0 in the WCC and claim the 2008 WCC crown.
San Diego will now wait the NCAA selection committee's decision on when and where the Toreros will go for the first round of the NCAA tournament. The NCAA Selection show will air live on Monday evening at 5 p.m. on ESPNEWS.
The Toreros struck first as just 41 seconds into the second half, senior forward Amy Epsten lobbed a ball from the 30 yards out into the goal box, where Elissa Magracia got her foot on the ball and punched it into the back of the net past a charging Portland goalkeeper to give USD 1-0 lead.
The Pilots then got back on even playing terms with USD in the 53rd minute of action as Sophie Schmidt controlled a cross from Danielle Foxhoven and snuck one past USD's goalkeeper to even the score at 1-1.
Portland then took the lead in the 73rd minute of action, as Megan Rapinoe took a corner kick and bowed the ball to the head of Korie Nicholson, who slipped one into the back of the net to give Portland a 2-1 lead.
The Pilots added to their lead just two minutes later as Schmidt crossed the ball to Michelle Enyeart, who scored from eight yards out to move the Portland lead to 3-1.
In the 86th minute of action, Portland added to their lead as Halley Kreminski controlled a pass from Schmidt to put the match at its final of 4-1.
Portland outshot the Toreros 15-4 and held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Brittany Cameron was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros as she allowed four goals and recorded five saves. Kelsey Davis was credited with the win in goal for the Pilots as she allowed one goal and recorded two saves.
