(San Diego, CA) - Following a week of final exams, the Toreros were slow out of the gates, but eventually turned up the heat and dealt the visiting Academy of Art Urban Knights a 79-49 loss at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The win evened USD's record at 6-6 and the Toreros will put their modest two-game winning streak on the line this Monday when they host the Boise State Broncos in a 7 pm contest. Sophomore Rob Jones led four players in double digit scoring with 16 points. He was followed by Gyno Pomare (15), Roberto Mafra (12) and Chris Lewis (10). Guard Weleh Dennis paced the Urban Knights (0-9) with 11 points.
The visitor's took a 13-7 lead in the first seven minutes, but USD went on an 18-0 run over the next 6 ½ minutes to forge ahead 25-13, and they never looked back. The Toreros headed into the locker room at halftime with a 38-22 advantage, and increased the lead to as many as 34 in the second half before settling for a 30-point victory.
For the game USD shot 50% from the field (31-62) and outrebounded the visitor's 37-29. Gyno Pomare and Matt Dorr each grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds, and Ryan Harbour came off the bench to chip in a season-best 8 points for the Toreros.
Boise State (6-3) plays at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday before heading to San Diego for Monday's 7 p.m. tilt at the JCP.
