SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team (7-5) went on a 12-0 run over the final 2:08 of the game, to claim a 65-62 non-conference win over visiting Cal State Fullerton (3-6) Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Senior forward Kiva Herman scored her game-high 27 points on 11-for-18 shooting from the floor, while also pulling down four rebounds. Senior center Amber Sprague recorded a double-double with 20 points and 19 rebounds and sophomore guard Sam Child was the final USD player in double figures, as she had 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds. As a team, USD shot 43 percent from the field and out rebounded the Titans 51-40.
In the first half, the Titans jumped out to a 14-6 lead through the first six minutes of action. But a Herman jumper then ignited a 17-8 run that was capped on a Herman jumper to give the Toreros a 23-22 lead with 7:15 remaining in the half. The two teams then sea sawed back and forth over the remaining seven minutes of action, before the Titans took a 34-33 lead going into the break.
In the second half, it was more of a sea saw battle, and finally with USD trailing 40-39, a Herman jumper sparked a 5-0 run that was capped on a Herman free-throw to give San Diego a 44-40 lead with 15:08 remaining in the game.
The Titans then came clawing back and over the next six minutes, as they outscored San Diego 9-4 to regain the lead with 7:51 remaining at 49-48. CSF would go on to build their lead up to as many as seven at 62-55 on a Lauren Chow three-pointer with 3:51 to go. The Toreros didn't fold, as a Sprague jumper ignited a 12-0 run to close out the game and give USD the 65-62 victory.
For the Titans, Chow led the team with 20 points, including hitting six three-pointers. Megan Richardson was the only other Fullerton player in double figures as she had 16. As a team, the Titans were held to a 36 percent shoot from the floor.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday Dec. 28, as they open play in the annual Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Classic against Long Island University at 6 p.m.
