LAIE, Hawaii - Three University of San Diego women's basketball players scored in double figures paced by Kiva Herman's 22 and Sam Child's 21 to propel the Toreros (5-3) to an 93-61 win over BYU-Hawaii Friday evening in a non-conference game.
Herman scored her 22 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the floor and Child scored her season-high 21 on a 7-for-9 performance from the floor. Morgan Henderson recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and had a team-best 10 rebounds. As a team, the Toreros shot 52 percent from the field.
In the first half, a Herman jumper sparked a 13-6 San Diego run over the first five minutes of action. The Seasiders then went on a 9-2 run to even things up at 15-15 with 11:35 remaining in the half. But a Henderson three-pointer then ignited a 10-4 USD run tat was capped on a pair of Herman free throws to give the Toreros a 25-21 advantage with 8:25 remaining in the half. San Diego then went on a 13-7 run to give them their first double-digit lead of the game at 38-28 with 3:38 to go in the first half. The Toreros would maintain that lead and take a 47-38 lead into the break.
In the second half, a Henderson jumper sparked a 10-6 run to give the Toreros a 57-46 lead with 16:26 to go in the game. USD then continued that momentum over the next five minutes and build up a 23-point lead at 73-50 on a free throw by Child with 11:26 to go in the game. USD would never look back as they cruised their way to a 93-61 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. game against Utah Valley.
