BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Behind two goals from senior striker Jen Mello and one goal from senior forward Amy Epsten, the 23rd-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team shutout Cal State Bakersfield, 3-0, in a non-conference match Sunday evening.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 5-2-0 overall, and have now won their five consecutive match. With the loss, the Roadrunners fall to 3-5-0.
Epsten tallied the only goal the Toreros would need in the ninth minute of action, as the Roadrunners committed a foul inside the goal box, which set up a penalty kick for San Diego. Epsten took the kick for USD and scored her third goal of the season to give USD a 1-0 lead.
Mello then pushed the Torero lead to two in the 25th minute of action, as she corralled a rebound off a Jackie Garcia shot, then hit a one-timer into the back of the net to move the San Diego lead to 2-0.
Mello wasn't done yet, as in the 15th minute of action she was able to put the match out of reach. Hallie Huston delivered a pass to a streaking Mello, who controlled the pass and dribbled past the Roadrunners defenders, and launched a laser strike past the CSUB goalkeeper to put the match at its final of 3-0.
For the second consecutive match, the Toreros had a decisive advantage in shots at 15-5, and USD held a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Brittany Cameron was credited with the win in goal for San Diego as the allowed no goals and recorded two saves. Her counterpart Marin Constantinou, was saddled with the loss for the Roadrunners as she allowed three goals and recorded four saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they head to Los Angeles to compete in the UCLA Women's Soccer Cup Tournament against New Mexico at 7:30 p.m.
