SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three Toreros recorded double digit kills paced by Amy Mahinalani DeGroot's match-best 17 to help propel the 17th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-18) win over UC Riverside Tuesday evening in a non-conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 9-1 overall and increase their winning streak to four matches. With the loss, the Highlanders fall to 5-8 overall.
DeGroot recorded her 17 kills on 38 attempts while only committing three attack errors to post a .368 hitting percentage. Jaimarie Sutherland was the second Torero in double digit kills as she had 10 on 20 attempts and hit for a .350 clip and the final USD player with double-digit kills was Ashton Basch, who had 10. Jessica Nyrop had a match-best 38 assists and Andrea Csaszi recorded a match-best 18 digs. As a team, USD hit for a .312 clip.
In the first set, The Toreros jumped out to an early 4-1 advantage that was sparked on a DeGroot kill off a set from Nyrop and capped on a UCR attack error. The Highlanders then went on a 4-1 run of their own to tie things up at 5-5. San Diego then responded with a 10-5 run that was ignited on a Riverside service error and capped on a UCR attack error to give USD a comfortable 15-10 lead. The Highlanders didn't go away as they pulled back to within two at 21-19, but the Toreros buckled down and claimed a 25-22 win.
In set two the Highlanders kept things close in the early going, but with the score knotted at 10-10, the Toreros used a 12-2 run sparked on a Sutherland Service ace and capped on a UCR attack error to take a commanding 21-11 lead, and the Toreros never looked back as they eased their way to the 25-15 win.
In the third and final set, the Highlanders again hung around with USD for the early part of the match, but with the score at 12-8 in favor of USD, a DeGroot kill off a set from Nyrop ignited a 10-5 San Diego run that was capped on a UCR attack error to put USD in complete control of the set, as USD would go on to complete the sweep with a 25-28 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they head to the Pacific Northwest to compete against No. 10 University of Washington in a non-conference match.
