Toreros Duel With Anteaters

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego Toreros fought to a 1-0 loss against the UC Irvine Anteaters Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium.

San Diego posted more shots in the second half defending well and holding Irvine to only one shot attempt. San Diego had a total of nine shots in the match to Irvine's 11.

In the 24th minute, UC Irvine's Michael Willrich scored the only goal of the match. San Diego defenders tried to clear a ball possessed by the anteaters' Irving Garcia. Garcia sent a pass to Willrich on the right side attacking the net. San Diego keeper Kelin Briones was ready with coverage as Willrich entered the penalty box giving the ball a solid touch past Briones into the far left net for a 1-0 lead.

The Toreros worked the ball into Anteater territory throughout the second half in order to score but was not able to net the equalizer.

San Diego's Kelin Briones recorded four saves in the match. Irvine recorded six corner kicks to San Diego's four. Each team recorded 16 fouls in the match. With the loss, the Toreros fall to 0-5-2 on the season.

San Diego will be back in action to wrap up their three game home stand when they face non-conference rival UCLA on Thursday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Torero Stadium.
