SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AP) - Gyno Pomare scored 20 points and San Diego built a huge lead before hanging on for an 80-70 win over Marshall on Friday.
San Diego (8-7) led 39-17 at halftime and led by 31 points twice in the second half, the last time at 68-37 with 7:14 remaining. But Marshall outscored the Toreros 31-7 to cut the lead to 75-68 on Shaquille Johnson's second straight 3-pointer with 52.4 seconds left.
Pomare, who became the school's career scoring leader in the Toreros' last game, hit a pair of free throws with 41.9 seconds remaining for a nine-point lead and the Thundering Herd never got closer than seven points.
Tyler Wilkerson had 22 points and tied his career high with 15 rebounds for Marshall (7-6), which made 18-of-23 free throws in the second half.
Rob Jones scored 13 points for San Diego, which made just 20-of-34 free throws in the second half and did not score a basket in the final 8:21.
San Diego will enter West Coast Conference play having won two straight and four of its last five when they travel to San Francisco next Friday, January 9th, to take on the USF Dons. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at War Memorial Gymnasium. USD will then head south on the 101 to play the Santa Clara Broncos on Sunday, January 11th, in a 2:05 p.m. game. Both contests will be televised by Comcast and air locally on Channel 4 San Diego.
