19th Ranked Toreros Lose 2-1 To LMU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 19 ranked University of San Diego men's soccer win streak was snapped Thursday night by West Coast Conference rival Loyola Marymount Lions when they scored the winning goal to win 2-1 in the 95th minute.

The No. 19 Toreros take the loss falling to 9-4-0 overall and 5-1-0 in WCC play. The Lions improve to 7-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the WCC. The Toreros currently retain possession of first place in the WCC standings despite the loss.

LMU's Logan McDaniel scored in the 18th minute when his shot from inside the penalty box got past USD goalkeeper Kelin Briones and rolled past the end line giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.

Down 1-0 after a first half LMU goal, the Toreros regrouped at halftime and tied the match at 1-1 when freshman Patrick Wallen scored for the Toreros in the 52nd minute. Forward Stephen Posa connected with Wallen who was 25 yards out from the goal. Wallen's shot deflected off of the shoulder of an LMU defender and landed just in the upper 90 lifting USD to 1-1. Give the assist to Posa.

San Diego had a solid opportunity to take the lead in the 70th minute when Posa tried to ground a ball with a header to take the shot inside the goalkeeper box. Posa missed and teammate Andrew Feld rushed in for a second attempt which was on target but cleared by an LMU defender standing at goal line. USD played tenacious defense to hold off the Lions until the end of regulation and forcing the overtime period.

The Toreros were unable to get a clear shot at goal in the overtime period. In the 95th minute, LMU defender Tyler Krumpe scored from 10 yards out giving LMU the 2-1 win.

San Diego goalkeeper Kelin Briones takes the loss tallying five saves on the night. LMU keeper Max young picks up the win with five saves. USD outshot the Lions 12-10 while LMU won the corner kick 7-4.

The two teams meet again on Sunday, October 25 at 3:00 p.m. when San Diego travels to Los Angeles to play the Lions at Sullivan Field.
