In the first set, it was a dog fight right out of the gates and was the longest set of the season for the Toreros. With the score knotted at 4-4, a Carrie Baird kill off a set from Myers sparked a 4-0 San Diego run that was capped on a Pepperdine attack error to give the Toreros a 8-4 advantage. USD was able to maintain a 3-4 point lead for a majority of the set. Then with the score at 22-18 in favor of the Toreros, a Rachel Grochmal kill ignited a 5-1 Pepperdine run to pull the Waves even with USD at 23-23. San Diego then grabbed set point with a Troost kill, but the Waves answered right back on a USD service error. USD would take set point five more times, and Pepperdine had it five times as well and finally with Pepperdine leading 35-34, a Victoria Adelhelm kill gave the Waves the win and momentum heading into the second set.
In set two, both teams took their turn with the lead in the early going and neither team had a lead bigger than two. Then with the score knotted at 17, a Kim Hill kill ignited a 8-0 Pepperdine run to close out the set and take a two set lead into the break.
In the third and final set, The Toreros were able to hold things close in the early going. But the Waves were able to take advantage of several USD miscues and eventually built up a four point lead at 10-6. Then a Troost kill out of a San Diego timeout sparked a 4-1 San Diego run that was capped on a Troost kill to pull the Toreros back to within one at 11-10. Pepperdine then answered back with a 6-0 run of their own to regain the momentum. The Waves never looked back as they went on to complete the sweep with a 25-18 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday when they host Loyola Marymount in a 1 p.m. match inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
