SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three Toreros scored in doubles figures but it was not enough, as San Diego fell to the UNLV Rebels by a final of 71-66 in a non-conference game Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Three Toreros managed to reach double figure scoring for the game, paced by senior forward Morgan Henderson who had a team-high 16 points, including going 2-for-5 from beyond the arc and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Sophomore forward Emily Hatch recorded a double-double with 14 points, and a season-high 13 boards, while junior guard Sam Child notched 14 points and four rebounds.
In the first half, the Toreros and Rebels traded basket-for-basket for the first 10 minutes. With the scored tied at 17-17 with 10:18 left in the half, Child dished the rock to freshman guard Julia Bennett, who squared up from beyond the arc to sink a triple, putting the Toreros up by three. San Diego would go on a 15-to-4 run over the next five minutes of action to go up 32-21.
UNLV would crawl back into the game over the final six minutes of the half, as they put together a 9-0 run that was capped on a Jamie Smith buzzer beating length of the court lay-up, to go into the break down only two at 32-30.
In the second half, the Rebels opened up with a 13-7 run to take a 46-39 lead with 16:02 to go thanks to a Alison Holiday three-pointer to give UNLV all the momentum.
One minute later Child hit a three point basket to ignite an 8-2 run to pull San Diego within one at 48-47 with 13:35 to go. UNLV would respond with a 6-1 run to take a 54-48 lead with 9:11 to go.
A pair of Morgan Henderson free-throws then sparked a 12-5 San Diego run that was capped on a pair of Connor free-throws to give the Toreros a 62-59 advantage with 2:55 to go.
The two teams then traded basket-for-basket over the next minute, before a Sandrine Nzeukou lay-up gave the Rebels back the lead for good as they held on to claim a 71-66 victory.
The Toreros will return to action n Saturday as they travel to San Luis Obispo to take on the Cal Poly Mustangs in a 2 p.m. non-conference game at Mott gym.
