Box Score
Fresno, Calif.- Not much went the way of the University of San Diego men's basketball team on Sunday evening as they lost to Fresno State 69-37 at the Save Mart Center. The defeat extends the Toreros' losing streak to four games.
USD (4-5) never gained consistency in their shooting as they hit only 11 of their 59 field goal attempts in the contest, including taking 21 shots from three-point range but draining four of them. Freshman guard Patrick McCollum was the lone Torero to reach double digits in points with 13 on 4-of-15 field goal shooting. Chris Lewis had a team-high 10 boards, but as a team, the Toreros were out-rebounded 45-40.
Forward Sylvester Seay scored a game-high 21 points for Fresno State (3-4) while also adding 10 rebounds to record a double-double. The Bulldogs shot 45.1% from the field.
With 13:39 remaining in the first half, Matt Dorr hit a jumper after a De'Jon Jackson defensive rebound and assist to tie the game at nine, but Dorr's two points would be the last successful field goal for USD until the 2:01 mark when McCollum drained one to set the score at 27-12 in favor of the Bulldogs. For the half, the Toreros took 29 shots from the field and sunk five of them.
The second half did not produce any better results for USD, as Fresno State stretched their 29-14 halftime lead over the course of the final minutes. McCollum snapped an almost six-minute span of no USD field goals with a three at the 4:54 mark. The 6-2 guard would go on to score eight of USD's final 12 points in the closing five minutes of the game.
The Toreros were without the services of senior guard Brandon Johnson in the loss, as he sat out due to a coaches' decision.
San Diego will return home and look to halt their losing streak when they take on New Mexico at 7 p.m. PT on Wednesday, December 9th at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
