SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Despite three University of San Diego women's basketball players scoring in double figures, Pepperdine University claimed a 66-56 victory over the Toreros Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 14-11 overall and fall to 5-6 in the WCC. With the win, the Waves improve to 13-11 overall and 6-4 in the WCC.
Kiva Herman led the team in scoring with her 17 points on 6-for-16 shooting performance from the field. Sam Child was the second player in double figures with 14 points and Dominique Conners added in 11 points. As a team, USD shot .322 from the floor and was out rebounded 43-38.
In the first half, it was a back and forth battle over the entire 20 minutes, with a total of 12 lead changes, six ties and both teams shooting under 40 percent from the field.
With 8:52 to go in the half and the score at 18-17 in favor of the Waves, a Sam Child three-pointer ignited a 7-2 San Diego run that was capped on a Kiva Herman jumper to give the Toreros their biggest lead of the half at 24-20 with 4:24 to go in the half.
Pepperdine then responded with a 12-4 run that was sparked on a Alex Jarrell jumper and capped on a pair of Nakeya Isabell free throws, to give the Waves a 32-28 lead going into the break.
In the second half, back-to-back buckets by Herman and Conners got USD back on even playing terms with the Waves, but Pepperdine then responded with a 6-0 run to regain a six-point advantage at 38-32 with 13:44 to go.
Then with the Waves leading 46-40, a Jarrell jumper sparked a 14-0 run to give the Waves the momentum and a 14-point lead at 54-40 with 5:11 to go.
USD then went on a 10-4 run to pull back to within eight on a Conner free throw with 2:23 to go, but that is as close as the Toreros would come, as Pepperdine held off the late USD push to claim a 66-56 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they host Saint Mary's College in their final home game of the season. Game is set for a 2 p.m. tip.
