SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior night turned out to be a beauty, as senior center Amber Sprague poured in a game-high 23 points en route to leading the Toreros to their second largest margin of victory in program history, a 94-52 win over Saint Mary's College, Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 15-11 overall, move to 6-6 in the WCC and have scored the most points in a WCC game in program history. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 9-18 overall and 5-7 in the WCC.
Sprague led all scorers with her 23 points on 8-for-14 shooting form the floor to go along with six assists and four blocks. Freshman point guard Dominique Conners scored 19 points on 6-for-6 from the floor as the second Torero in double figures. Kiva Herman and Sam Child were the last two Toreros in double figures as each had 14 points a piece. As a team, USD shot 50.8 percent from the floor and out rebounded the Gaels 46-40.
The Toreros opened the game on fire as they went on a 7-2 run over the first three minutes of action. After the Gaels pulled to within three at 11-8 on a pair of Amber Coaty free throws, a Morgan Henderson 3-pointer ignited a 21-2 run that featured an up tempo run and gun style of offense to give the Toreros all the momentum and a 32-10 lead with 9:56 to go. San Diego never let their foot off the gas as they closed out the half on a 15-11 run, giving USD a 47-21 lead going into the break.
The second half was more of the same as San Diego was hitting on all cylinders as they gradually built up their lead to as many as 44 at 84-40 on a Sara VanderHorst free throw with 4:38 to go in the game. The Toreros never looked back as they cruised their way to a 94-52 victory.
The Toreros will close out the regular season on the road, heading to the University of Portland on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game, then heading to Gonzaga on Saturday for a 2 p.m. showdown with the Zags in Spokane.
