Final Stats
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team fell this evening to the University of Connecticut after a late inning comeback that fell short in the opening game of the San Diego Classic II softball tournament co-hosted by USD and San Diego State. The Huskies defeated the Toreros 4-3 in eight innings.
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in first inning and recorded two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead.
The Toreros mounted a comeback in the sixth inning. With one out, Carey Casciola took first base on a fielder's choice and then stole second base. Kristen Gensler struck out. Lindsey Fleet singled to centerfield scoring Casciola cutting the lead 3-1. Alyssa Schott pinch ran for Fleet. Celeste Soto doubled to deep centerfield scoring Schott cutting the lead 3-2. Jennifer Ellenbeck singled and advanced to second base allowing Soto to score and tie the game at 3-3.
Neither team scored in the seventh inning as the game went into extra innings. Connecticut led off the top of the eighth inning with a homerun over left field to win the game 4-3.
The Toreros fall to 3-17 overall. USD continues with day two of the San Diego Classic II as they host five games at the USD Softball Complex starting with Northern Colorado facing off against Miami University at 9:00 a.m. The Toreros will play in the final game of the day when they take on Iowa State at 7:00 p.m.
