DALY CITY, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's golf team finished in fourth place overall at the 2009 NCAA West Regionals and earned the program's first berth into the 2009 NCAA Championships on May 26-30 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Five of the thirteen teams, along with two players, advance to the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships which will be played May 26-30, 2009 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. There will be 30 teams of five players, along with six individuals, participating in the event which will be hosted by the University of Toledo.

"Obviously we are very excited to advance to nationals," said sixth-year head coach Tim Mickelson. "This is great progression and a big step in the right direction for the USD golf program."

The Toreros shot a final day team score of 283 to finish at 849 (-15) and earn one of the five bids to Nationals. Arizona State won the regional at 828 (-36). They were followed by Oregon at 837 (-27), and Texas A&M at 840 (-24). Following USD and earning the fifth bid to Nationals was Southern California at 853 (-11).

USD graduate student Ian Coffman was USD's top finisher with a five-under par total of 211. He turned in three consistent and solid rounds of 71-70-70 to finish in a tie for 12th, and was USD's lone Torero to finish in the top-15. Senior Blake Trimble also fired a final round 70 to finish at 213 (72-71-70), and his 3-under par total was good for a top-20 finish (tie for 18th). Freshman Alex Ching, the WCC Freshman of the Year, carded a final day 73 and finished tied for 24th overall at 214 (72-69-73). Sophomore Jason Shano turned in his best round on day three with a 70 and finished tied for 43rd at 218 (73-75-70). Sophomore Gunner Wiebe, whose 68 on round two helped solidify USD's third place position after round two, finished tied for 66th overall at 224 (76-68-80).

Medalist honors were won by Arizona State's Jesper Kennegard who finished at 204 (66-68-70). He edged out Texas A&M's Bronson Burgoon who was one shot back at 205 (69-72-64).
