SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman outside hitters Carrie Baird and Amber Tatsch paced the 23rd-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over visiting Seattle University in a non-conference match at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion Tuesday evening.
With the 25-15, 25-14, 25-15 win, the Toreros improve to 5-3 overall and run their winning streak to four matches. With the loss, the Redhawks fall to 3-8 overall.
Baird had a career night, as she recorded a career-high 13 kills on 21 attempts with no errors to post a career-high .619 attack percentage. The second Torero in double-digit kills was Tatsch, who also recorded a career-high with 11 kills on 25 swings while only committing two attack errors to hit for a .360 clip, and she recorded 12 digs to post her first career double-double. Ali Troost also had a solid night offensively as she recorded eight kills and hit for a .389 clip. Kayleen Webster paced the team's defense with 17 digs, while Kelsi Myers recorded a match-best 40 assists in helping direct the USD offense to a season-high .371 attack percentage.
In the first set, the Redhawks captured the first point of the match on a Kelly Biette kill, but a Colleen Carlson kill ignited a 5-2 San Diego run that was capped on a Torey Ellick kill to give the Toreros a 5-3 advantage. Seattle would then go to a 3-1 run to knot the score at 6-6, but a Tatsch kill off a set from Myers sparked a 7-2 San Diego run that was bookended on a Baird kill to give the Toreros control of the set and a 13-8 lead. San Diego never looked back as they cruised their way to a 25-15 win.
In the second set, USD raced out to a 7-2 lead as a Carlson again got things going with a kill and Ellick capped the run with a kill off a set from Myers. USD would then use runs of 4-0 and 5-0 to take complete control of the match. USD would hit for a match-best .444 in this set, as they eased their way to a 25-14 win
In the third and final set, it was all San Diego once again, as they jumped out to a 8-3 lead and never looked back, claiming the match with a 25-15 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday night, as they host No. 19 UC Irvine in a 7 p.m. match inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion to kick off the USD Invitational.
