Toreros Battle Bruins In 2-1 Loss Friday Night

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - As the fog rolled into Torero Stadium causing the field to nearly disappear, the No. 8 UCLA Bruins defeated the University of San Diego Toreros 2-1 in regulation. The Toreros prevented the shutout with a goal by senior forward Andrew Feld in the second half.

The Bruins scored in the opening 10 minutes of the match off of a broken play that resulted in a quick shot by Bruin Ryan Hollingshead, assisted by Chris Cummings and Kyle Nakazawa. San Diego fought back with three solid shot attempts in the final two minutes of the half, two of which came from just outside the goalkeepers box. The half ended at 1-0 in favor of UCLA.

In the 47th minute, San Diego committed a foul inside their own penalty box. Kyle Nakazawa lined up a penalty kick against Briones and fired off a right footed shot to the left side of the goal. Briones tracked the ball well nearly blocking it but just missed as the ball landed in the net as the Toreros fell behind 2-0.

In the 60th minute, San Diego caught a break as play was whistled dead by the official when a UCLA defender caught a hand ball in their own penalty box. Senior Andrew Feld lined up the shot as UCLA's goalkeeper dove to the right for the block, Feld put a right-footed shot to the lower left corner of the goal cutting the lead 2-1.

San Diego battled to tie up the match in the final ten minutes but was unable to connect as the Bruins went on to win 2-1. USD falls to 4-3-0 on the season while UCLA improves to 4-1-0.

USD goalkeeper tallied two more saves while UCLA goalkeeper Brian Rowe recorded eight saves on the night. San Diego out-shot the Bruins 15-8, while UCLA held the edge on corners 5-3.

San Diego returns to the pitch on Sunday, October 4 as they open up West Coast Conference action against San Francisco at Torero Stadium.
