SAN DIEGO - With relative ease Saturday afternoon, the University of San Diego men's tennis team downed its cross-town rival in UC San Diego, 7-0, on the home courts of the USD West Tennis Complex. San Diego is now 2-0 in its 2010 spring campaign.
"The guys competed well today and played with high intensity throughout the match. Its good to see them getting more comfortable and really beginning to grasp what it is we are trying to do here," commented first year head coach Brett Masi, following the Torero head-to-head win.
San Diego would wrap up the doubles point with consecutive wins at Court #1 and Court #3. Junior veteran tandem, Dean Jackson and Nils Schive, earned the first victory on the day by downing Austin West and Armaun Emami, 8-3, at No. 1. Wrapping up the point and initial advantage for the Toreros, sophomore Nikola Bubnic and junior Abdullah Hashem hung tough to take down Triton team of Sam Ling and Naveem Dixit, 8-6.
From there on out, it was smoothing sailing for the Toreros, as San Diego would take all six singles matches in straight sets. Jackson, playing at Court #1 would run past UCSD's Erik Elliot in identical set victories, 6-0, 6-0. Bubnic would give San Diego a 3-0 edge with a win over Chan Champan (6-0, 6-2) over on Court #2 and freshman Thibaut Visy solidified the Torero triumph on Court #3 by overtaking Jake Fellow, 6-1, 6-3.
San Diego was able to add three more wins to complete the sweep. At Court #5, Hashem beat Ling 6-1, 7-5. Earning his first dual match win while playing on Court #6, junior transfer Casey Powers moved past Dixit, 6-2, 6-1, and finishing off the match at Court #4, Schive was able to trip up Vincent Nguyen, 6-2, 6-0, as the sun set on the West Tennis Complex to signal match's end.
The Toreros will be tested next week, as they travel North to face the No. 1 team in the land, USC, next Friday, Feb. 5th and will follow up on Saturday, Feb. 6th with a match against 4th ranked UCLA.
