SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Patrick Wallen had two spectacular goals lifting USD to a 2-1 victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a West Coast Conference show down at Torero Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
San Diego improves to 5-5-1 on the season and 2-2-0 in WCC play while the Bulldogs fall to 3-8-0 and 0-4-0 in WCC play.
The Bulldogs took an early lead on a goal by James Partee in the 16th minute. Torero goalkeeper Michael D'Arrigo punched out a corner kick clearing it to Gonzaga's Philippe Garre who passed it to Partee on the far side into the high center net from 30 yards out to take a 1-0 lead.
In the 56th minute, sophomore striker Patrick Wallen would score his first of two goals on the day. Stephen Posa raced into Gonzaga territory from midfield dishing the ball off to Marcello Carminatti on the far side. Carminatti sent the ball into Wallen who was standing in the six yard box taking possession of his knee and firing off a shot for the equalizer. Credit Carminatti and Posa with the assist.
In the 79th minute, Wallen would lift USD to a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the match. After Wallen collided with the Gonzaga goalkeeper and receiving a yellow card caution for it, Wallen scored following the free kick by the keeper. Sergio Carranza sent the ball to Wallen from midfield who was sprinting towards the goal. Wallen received the pass just outside the penalty box and after beating two Gonzaga defenders, he took his shot on the far side of the keepers box for the 2-1 lead. Credit Carranza with the assist.
San Diego held the advantage in shots 17-5 and 7-2 on corner kicks. D'Arrigo had two saves on the day while Gonzaga keeper Ryan Caballero had six saves on the day.
The Toreros prepare for Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, October 13 in Los Angeles as they take on the Lions at 2:00 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
