Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Defender Cory Norris and forward Stephen Posa lifted the University of San Diego men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the No 24 ranked LMU Lions at home in a WCC show down Wednesday night. USD hands LMU their first loss in West Coast Conference play and snap a streak that dates back to September 19 when they fell 2-1 against San Jose State.

The Toreros improve to 6-6-2 on the season and 3-3-1 in WCC action while the Lions fall to 9-4-2 overall and 5-1-1 in WCC play.

Both teams were playing aggressively as eight fouls were called in the first fifteen minutes of the match. LMU had a nice look at goal on a foul shot on the near side from 30 yards out. The ball went straight towards the near post and was headed back by Christian Alvarado standing four feet from near post right into the hands of USD goalkeeper Michael D'Arrigo standing two feet behind him for the save.

James Cohn had a nice chance to score from in the box at six yards out on the far side tried. Cohn nearly put in a header which had a high arc sending the LMU goalkeeper back peddling to the net as the ball bounced over the bar and out of bounds.

San Diego broke the 0-0 knot in the 53rd minute when from the near side about 30 yards out, midfielder Dan Delgado sent a ball to the far side where defender Cory Norris was waiting inside the penalty box and connected on a header netting his first career goal lifting USD to a 1-0 lead. Credit Delgado with the assist.

The Toreros extended their lead in the 62nd minute off a Stephen Posa goal. From 50 yards out on the near side junior defender Matthew Chavez sent the ball to nearly the same spot as Norris' goal. Forward Stephen Posa wrangled control of the ball and fired off a quick touch for the goal from seven yards out for the 2-0 lead. Credit Chavez with the assist.

LMU wouldn't go quietly as they cut USD's lead in the 80th minute when Phil Da Silva netted a goal from the far side along the end line past D'Arrigo. However, USD would hold on for the remaining ten minutes to defeat the nationally ranked Lions 2-1.

San Diego returns to action on Friday, October 29 as part of a USD doubleheader with the women's soccer team. The men open the evening with a 5:00 p.m. match against Santa Clara, followed by the women's soccer team at approximately 7:30 against Pepperdine at Torero Stadium.
