SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Conor McFadden's late goal in the second half wasn't enough as the USD Toreros fell Friday night to the Santa Clara Broncos 2-1 at Torero Stadium.
The Toreros drop to 6-7-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the West Coast Conference. Santa Clara improves to 7-4-5 overall and 4-0-4 in WCC play.
Santa Clara scored quickly finding the net in the 3rd minute of the match. Erik Hurtado scored on a header from a corner kick. In the 53rd minute, USD committed a hard foul in their box awarding a penalty kick to the Broncos. Hurtado scored again shooting the lower right for the 2-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, USD responded with a Conor McFadden goal. A foul about 30 yards out on the near side by Santa Clara gave USD an opportunity to setup in the penalty box. Dan Delgado sent a ball to the far side where McFadden connected from four yards out cutting the Santa Clara lead, 2-1. Credit Delgado with the assist. USD had a few more good looks but was unable to connect to score the equalizer.
The squads combined for 30 fouls, 10 of which came from USD and 20 by Santa Clara. USD out-shot the Broncos 5-3 and owned a 6-5 tally on corner kicks.
USD prepares next week for their final road trip of the season traveling to the Pacific Northwest to take on Gonzaga on Friday, November 5 in Spokane, Washington followed by a trip to Portland, Oregon on Sunday, November 7 against the Pilots.
