SAN FRANCISCO, CA - With goals from Marcello Carminatti, Patrick Wallen, and Sergio Carranza, the Torero men's soccer team returned from the Bay Area with a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon over the University of San Francisco Don's.
The Toreros improve to 4-4-1 on the season and have a 1-1-0 mark in conference play. USD is currently in fifth place in the WCC standings with three points after the first weekend of conference action.
The Toreros took a late first half 1-0 lead after posting 13 shots in the half when Marcello Carminatti scored in the 34th minute. Conor McFadden sent a ball up field to Carminatti who connected on a shot from 10 yards out to the far post recording a team high fourth goal of the season.
Just after the intermission, Patrick Wallen scored in the 49th minute to lift USD to a 2-0 lead. Teammate Stephen Posa linked up with Wallen who broke away from the USF defense beating the keeper with a shot to the far post from 10 yards out giving USD a 2-0 lead.
The Don's would score following the kickoff cutting USD's lead to 2-1 when USF's Felipe Cabrera would score on a point blank volley.
The Toreros scored their final goal of the match when the Don's failed to clear a ball from inside the penalty box as Sergio Carranza fired off a shot to the far post from five yards out giving USD a 3-1 victory.
San Diego outshot the Don's 20-16 and held the advantage on corner kicks 6-4. Goalkeeper Adam Campbell recorded five saves in 90 minutes of play allowing only one goal.
USD returns home to host a weekend of Pacific Northwest teams with Portland on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Torero Stadium followed by a 2:00 p.m. match with Gonzaga.
