SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros fell in a 1-0 loss to No. 25 Portland in their WCC home opener against the Pilots at Torero Stadium Friday evening. San Diego falls to 4-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in WCC play while the Pilots improve to 5-1-4 overall with a WCC mark of 2-0-1.
San Diego had numerous opportunities to score as both teams recorded 11 shots on the day and six shots on goal each.
One Torero opportunity came in the 51st minute when Stephen Posa streaked down the near side of the field to the end line where he thought he was inbounds and centered a pass to Patrick Wallen standing three yards in front of the box ready to shoot. However the side judge ruled the ball was out of bounds and awarded Portland a goal kick.
In the 63rd minute, Posa, Christian Duke and Wallen help possession of the ball from the Pilots defense. Duke sent the ball to Wallen who one touched it and fired a shot from 15 yards out which was saved by Portland keeper Austin Guerrero at the near post. The play was called dead however because of a Torero foul.
Portland's goal came in the 81st minute when San Diego tried to clear a shot which deflected off of the heel and sent arcing 15 feet in the air over USD keeper Michael D'Arrigo who came out ready to deflect a shot but was unable to race back and prevent the ball from making it into the net.
San Diego was evenly matched with the nationally ranked Pilots as D'Arrigo had five saves on the night to Guerrero's six. Both teams had four corner kicks and USD recorded 13 fouls to USD's nine. San Diego rests up for their next match against the Gonzaga Bulldogs who ever Sunday's contest with a 3-1 loss to Loyola Marymount on Friday evening in Los Angeles. The Toreros and Bulldogs will kickoff at 2:00 p.m. at Torero Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
