Final Stats

Palo Alto, Calif. - The University of San Diego basketball team dropped their first game of the season as they fell to Stanford University 64-48 on Monday evening at the Maples Pavilion in a non-conference matchup.

The Toreros (1-1), despite out-shooting Stanford in the second half, were unable to overcome their 31.8% field goal shooting percentage in the first half. USD posted a 43.5% field goal percentage in the second half, besting Stanford's 40.7%.

The game was Stanford's (1-0) first of the regular season.

Guards Darian Norris and Devin Ginty led all Toreros with 10 points apiece. Ginty made four of his six field goals, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, as well as grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists. Sophomore Chris Manresa added eight points, while also recording seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

The Toreros fell behind 35-19 after the first half despite neither team shooting better than 40% from the field in the opening half. The difference in the score, though, stemmed from Stanford converting USD's 13 first-half turnovers into 16 points while the Toreros were unable to score any points off of Stanford's three first-half turnovers.

USD was tied with Stanford in the early parts of the first half when Manresa tied it up at seven with a short jumper at the 15:29 mark. The Manresa field goal, however, was the last USD field goal until the 6:07 mark when Devin Ginty hit a three-pointer to snap a stretch of 11 straight missed shots for USD.

The Cardinal managed to turn the almost ten-minute span of no field goals from USD into an 18-0 run that helped them turn the once tied game into a 25-7 Stanford lead. The Stanford advantage stretched to as much as 19 points when Stanford's Andrew Zimmerman, who had a game-high 14 points, hit a jumper with at the 3:24 mark in the first half to make it 31-12.

The Toreros cut Stanford's 16-point halftime lead into eight points through the first four minutes of the second half when Manresa followed up his own shot with another lay-up that made it 37-29 with 16 minutes remaining.

Manresa would again help bring the Toreros back within eight three minutes later. Manresa blocked a Jeremy Green lay-up and led the Toreros up the floor where he finished off the ensuing offensive possession with a short jumper.

The eight points were the closest the Toreros could close within Stanford, though, as the Cardinal quickly stretched their lead back to double-digits for good less than a minute later.

The Toreros will return to action on Friday, November 19th when they take on Boise State at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
