LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team suffered its first set-back of the season, a 66-48 loss, to UNLV Friday evening in a non-conference game at Cox Pavilion.
Junior guard Dominique Conners led the Toreros offensively as she scored 14 points on 4-for-13 shooting from the floor. Senior center Nya Mason was the second USD player in double figures as she recorded a career-high 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field. As a team, USD (1-1) shot .373 from the field and was out rebounded 42-29.
In the first half, Morgan Woodrow hit the games first basket, but the Rebels (2-0) answered right back with a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead with 15:29 to go. Back-to-back jumpers by Conners and Mason pulled USD back to within four at 10-6 with 14:18 to go. Both teams then went cold form the floor over the next several minutes, until UNLV's India Chaney hit a three-pointer to give the home team a 13-6 edge with 13:11 to go. After UNLV quickly built up a double-digit lead at 20-10 with 10:30 to go, the Toreros then kept even with the Rebels over the next four minutes trading basket-for-basket, until the Rebels went on a 14-7 run to close out the half and take a 42-25 lead into the break.
In the second half, UNLV would quickly build up its lead to 20 at 45-25, but a Emily Hatch jumper then jump starred a 6-0 San Diego run that was capped on a pair of Conners free throws to pull the Toreros to within 14 at 45-31 with 14:38 to go. The Rebels were able to hold a 15-20 point lead for a majority of the half, but the Toreros made a little run late in the game to make things interesting. With the Toreros trailing 56-41, a Mason lay-up ignited a 4-1 Toreros run to pull San Diego back to within 12 at 57-45 with 5:34 to go, forcing the Rebels into a timeout. But that is as close as the Toreros would get, as the Rebels went on to claim a 66-48 win.
San Diego will return to action on Sunday as they return to the Jenny Craig Pavilion to host Seattle University in its home opener at 2 p.m.
