Nov. 6, 2010

Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- For the second time this season the University of San Diego defense held a Pioneer Football League opponent scoreless, this time shutting out Morehead State 34-0 on senior day Saturday afternoon from Torero Stadium. With the win the Toreros move to 4-6 overall and 4-3 in PFL play, while the Eagles drop to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the PFL.

The Toreros set the pace out of the gates, controlling the first half by putting up 24 points while outgaining the Morehead State offense 240-98. Junior cornerback Al-Rilwan Adeyemi put USD on the board with his first of two interceptions in the half, returning the pick 54 yards for a touchdown on the Eagles' opening drive.

Freshman quarterback Mason Mills continued the Torero offensive momentum at the beginning of the second quarter when he connected with wide receiver Kyle Warren for a 59-yard strike down the sideline on the first play of the drive to put USD up 14-0. The score was Warren's first touchdown since week one, when he caught two touchdown passes against Azusa Pacific.

Torero kicker Stanley Shurson converted a 30-yard field goal with just over seven minutes remaining in the half that was followed by another touchdown pass from Mills at the 1:12 mark, this time lofting a pass to Reggie Bell in one-on-one coverage that Bell snagged and dove into the endzone, giving USD the 24-0 halftime lead.

USD opened the second half by shutting down the Morehead State offense on consecutive possessions and, after getting the ball back on a punt, the Toreros used a nine-play, 35-yard drive that ended in Shurson's second field goal of the day, a 33-yarder.

The Toreros wrapped up their scoring with 10:20 remaining in the game as Mills found senior wideout Godfrey Smith in the back of the endzone for a five-yard touchdown pass, Mills' third of the game.

Mills finished with three touchdown tosses on 17 of 32 passing for 240 yards. Junior running back Phil Morelli led the USD rushing attack with 77 yards on 15 carries and Smith had a team-high four catches for 27 yards and a score.

The Torero defense did a stellar job of keeping the Morehead State offense in check, at one point forcing eight punts in a row. PFL interception leader, Fred Obi added a first-half interception and lineman Mario Kurn recorded nine tackles and a sack. As a team, the Toreros tallied four sacks on the day while holding the Eagles to a paltry 133 yards of offense, including a net total of three rushing yards.

Morehead State quarterback Zach Lewis completed 14 passes on 38 attempts with three interceptions. The Eagles' Tony Bachman recorded a game-best 16 tackles and lineman Jerome Raymond pitched in with two sacks and six tackles of his own.

The Toreros conclude their season next weekend when they travel to North Carolina for a matchup with Davidson at 10:00 a.m. PT.
