SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team was unable to make it a third consecutive Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Classic championship, as the University of Texas defeated the Toreros 81-57 Thursday evening in a non-conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With loss, the Toreros fall to 9-4 overall and saw their season-high four game winning streak come to an end. With the win, the Longhorns improve to 10-3 overall.
Senior guard Sam Child led all scorers with her 19 points, and with this point total, Child has now tied Morgan Henderson (2006-10) for 10th all-time at USD on the scoring charts with 1,079 career points. Morgan Woodrow was the second of three Toreros in double figures, as she had 14 points and Emily Hatch recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. Dominique Conners scored five points, which moved her past the 1,000 career points mark at 1,001. As a team, USD shot .278, but they were even with the Longhorns in rebounds at 49 a piece.
In the first half, Texas jumped out to an early lead as a Yvonne Anderson 3-pointer ignited a 7-1 run. Child then got going offensively as she drained a 3-pointer of her own at the 18:03 mark which ignited a 5-0 Toreros run to pull San Diego to within one at 7-6. But Texas then regained the momentum and used a 18-7 run over the next seven minutes to grab a 12-point edge at 25-13 with 11:27 to go. The Longhorns then slowly began to pull away from the Toreros and went on to build up a 22-point lead heading into the break.
In the second half, it was all Longhorns, as Texas continued the momentum from the first half and would go on to build up its lead to as many as as 34 at 78-44 with 4:55 to go, before settling for a 81-57 victory.
Texas was led offensively by Anderson, who scored a team-leading 18 points, while Chassidy Fussell (17 points), Kathleen Nash (14 points) and Chelsea Bass (10 points) also scored in double figures. As a team, the Longhorns shot .413 from the field.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they open West Coast Conference play with a 7 p.m. game against Pepperdine University inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
