At the end-of-the-season USD Football Awards Banquet, JT Rogan ( Coronado, CA) was tabbed the team's Most Valuable Player. Rogan, who was granted a sixth-year by the NCAA after suffering a season-ending knee injury in game one of the 2008 campaign, led the Toreros in rushing (546 yards, 7 TDs) and kickoff returns (23.5 yards per return). He leaves USD as the program's all-time leader in rushing (3,559 yards),touchdowns (54) and points scored (326). Senior corner Gabriel Derricks (Oak Park, CA) was named the Defensive MVP while redshirt sophomore TE Patrick Doyle (Chicago, IL) received the Offensive MVP award.
Additional awards were handed out to senior center Nick Kostielney (Hollister, CA), the Dave Adolph "Do You Love Football" Award for Offense; senior safety Derek Pilkington (Sterling, CO), the Dave Adolph "Do You Love Football" Award for Defense; senior offensive lineman Pat Calahan (Mission Viejo, CA), the Most Outstanding Lineman Award; senior all-purpose back Justin Fontenberry (Oakland, CA), the Most Improved Offensive Player Award; redshirt sophomore Joe Martin (Lake Oswego, OR), the Most Improved Defensive Player Award; senior defensive end Kevin Dunn (Santa Barbara, CA), the Strength Coaches Award; sophomore wide receiver Eric Fiege (San Diego, CA), the Most Outstanding First Year Player Award; senior offensive tackle and long snapper Conrad Smith (Long Beach, CA), the Dr. James B. Orwig Scholar Athlete Award; sophomore punter Kyle Negrete (Fresno, CA), the Kevin Briscoe Special Teams Player of the Year; freshman linebacker Ryan Downing (Encinitas, CA), the Scout Defensive MVP Award; and freshman TE Patrick Bowler (San Carlos, CA), the Scout Offensive Player of the Year Award.
