Toreros Saddle Gauchos with 5-2 Loss

Feb. 20, 2010

SAN DIEGO - The University of San Diego men's tennis team advanced to a record of 4-1 Saturday afternoon by defeating the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 5-2, at the USD West Tennis Courts. The match lasted over four and half hours, prompting the court lights to take affect before night set in. With the loss, the Gauchos fall to 3-5 in dual match competition.

To start the match, it was the Gauchos with the advantage, as UCSB quickly wrapped up the all-important doubles point with two consecutive wins at Court #2 and #3. Finishing first in tandem action, Gaucho grouping, Scott Hohenstein and Evan Jurgensen, grabbed the first win of the day at Court #2 over Toreros senior Charl Wolmarans and freshman Thibaut Visy with an 8-3 victory. And at Court #3 sophomore Nikola Bubnic and junior Abdullah Hashem could not hold off the Gaucho pairing of Lucas Sudow and Benjamin Recknagel, also falling by a final of 8-3. As the point had already been secured by UCSB, both teams decided to suspend the final doubles match.

But San Diego would battle back in the individual matches, taking the first two points at Court #1 and #2. Junior Dean Jackson powered past his Gaucho counterpart in Philip Therp at Court #1, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Bubnic followed suite, saddling Konigsfeldt with a 7-5, 7-5 loss.

The Gauchos would look to answer at Court #6, as Recknagel would take Hashem to three sets before coming away with the victory, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5. Again however, San Diego would not be denied and managed to break the 2-2 tie with a three set triumph (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) by Visy at Court #3 over Gaucho Hohenstein.

With a 3-2 lead, USD was in pursuit of one final victory to clinch and would find it at Court #4. The senior Wolmarans came through in the clutch, powering past Sudow, 4-6, 7-6(10-8), 6-4 and wrapping up the USD match win.

San Diego would get its final singles point at Court #5, as junior Nils Schive fought hard and came out on the other side against Chavez Goggin, winning 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2).

USD will look to capture their fifth win in the 2010 spring dual match campaign against the UNLV Rebels Sun., Feb. 21st. Match is set for a noon start time at the USD West Tennis Courts.
