SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's tennis team notched its fourth straight match win Thursday evening over Cal Poly, winning by a final of 5-2 at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
The Toreros improve to 6-1 overall while Cal Poly drops its seventh straight match, remaining win-less in 2010.
In doubles action, San Diego would lock up the early advantage by taking two of three tandem contests from the Mustangs. At Court #1, Dean Jackson and Nils Schive secured a victory over Cal Poly's pairing of Matt Fawcett and Rob Foy, downing the `Stangs, 9-8. Earning the clinching win at Court #3, Nikola Bubnic and Abdullah Hashem powered past Drew Jacobs and Robert Zacks, wrapping up the initial point with an 8-6 Torero triumph.
USD would capture four singles points from Cal Poly, two of which went in straight sets. Bubnic, ranked #82 in the recent ITA rankings released Feb. 18th, would up-end Jordan Bridge at Court #2, 7-5, 7-6, garnering his sixth dual-match singles victory of 2010. Competing at Court #1, Jackson, also with his sixth singles win of the season, was extended to three sets before taking out Fawcett, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Thibaut Visy and Charl Wolmarans would secure the final two singles points at Courts 3 and 4, shutting out Jacobs (6-1, 3-6, 7-6) and Alex Sonesson (6-3, 6-2), respectively.
Two singles matches would go the way of the Mustangs, as Foy downed Schive, 6-3, 6-2, at Court #5 and Brain McPhee outlasted his Torero counterpart, Abdullah Hashem, at Court #6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
San Diego will pick up the racquet tomorrow, this time against the University of the Pacific. The match will be held at the Mustang Complex on the campus of Cal Poly and will kick-off at the 1:30 p.m. mark.
