Tigers Take A Bite Out of Torero Win Streak

Feb. 26, 2010

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - With the score knotted at 3-all and doubles play waiting on the horizon, the University of San Diego men's tennis team could not pull out the deciding point against the University of Pacific, which would ultimately take match triumphs at Court #2 and #3 to snatch the 4-3 victory from San Diego, Friday afternoon at the host site of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

The Toreros, with their four match win streak snapped, fall to 6-2 while the Tigers grabbed their first win of the season, now standing at an overall mark of 1-3.

A running theme of the 2010 season, San Diego would once again be forced to deal with the threat of rain and consequently play out singles matches first.

The Toreros would lock down the initial point at Court #1, as Dean Jackson upset ITA's 87th ranked Artem Gramma. Jackson was pushed to three sets but eventually came away with the win, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Pacific bounced right back at Court #2, when Tiger Ivan Garcia-Castro took on #82 Nikola Bubnic. Bubnic captured the first set 6-4, but Garcia-Castro rebounded to secure the next two sets (6-3, 6-3) and subsequently take down his ranked Torero counterpart.

USD would pick up two wins at Court #3 and #4, as Charl Wolmarans, in an extended match, outlasted Pacific's Fernando Ristow, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, while one court over, Thibaut Visy downed Renan Delsin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

San Diego would then look to put away the match, as the Toreros were up 3-1 with two contests remaining. But hiccups at Courts #5 and #6 forced USD in to "overtime" in the form of doubles competition.

With the score all tied up, things looked promising for San Diego, as Torero tandem of Jackson and Schive powered past Tigers Vegerd Veskimagi and Karl-Erik Paaro at Court #1, winning by a final of 8-6. But Pacific pairing of Gramma and Garcia-Castro evened the score once again with an 8-6 victory over Wolmarans and Visy at Court #2.

In the final match of the day, at Court #3, Bubnic and Hashem battled Delsin and Ristow, but to no avail, as the Tigers pulled together for an 8-2 defeat of San Diego and more importantly, the match victory.

San Diego will look to get back to winning ways next week when they face UC Irvine, Wed., Mar. 3rd at the campus of UCI.
