SALT LAKE CITY - The 58th ranked University of San Diego men's tennis team eclipsed the University of Utah, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City at the Eccles Tennis Center.
The Toreros, after having dropped four straight, grab their eighth win and improve to an overall mark of 8-6. The Utes continue to struggle, dropping to 4-9.
San Diego would get a scare right away, as the Utes right out of the gate swept the doubles point with relative ease to go up 1-0 and grab the early edge.
The Toreros rebounded in the singles competition, taking five of the six contests. USD would notch the first three matches, before relinquishing a point. Abdullah Hashem started things off at Court #6 with a tough battle against Stephen Jacobs. Hashem ultimately downed Jacobs, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
Up next for San Diego, Nils Schive at Court #4, after falling in the first set, 2-6, shut down Timmy Allin of Utah, 6-4, 6-1. Casey Powers followed up Schive's triumph with a win of his own at Court #5. Powers, in his debut match at the No. 5 position, knotted up the third consecutive point for the Toreros with a victory over Benito Suriano, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
The Mountain West Conference affiliate got right back in it at Court #1, when Phillip Eilers upset Nikola Bubnic, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. With the loss, Bubnic's five match win streak comes to an end.
The Toreros would not be shaken, however, winning the final two matches at Court #2 and #3. Charl Wolmarans defeated Jason Smits at, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, and soon after, Thibaut Visy halted his five match slump with a three set victory (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) over Alex Golding.
San Diego returns home this coming week for one match against Tulane on Sunday, March 28 at 1:30 p.m. PT at the USD West Tennis Courts. USD will then take a week off before, in its final home match of the season, facing cross-town rival SDSU.
